A head-on truck collision in Vineland Tuesday afternoon demolished both vehicles, caused a diesel spill and and sent one driver to hosptial with life-threatening injuries.
Niagara EMS, police and Lincoln Fire were dispatched to the head-on collision involving two large trucks on Victoria Avenue at 7th Avenue.
Initial investigation revealed that a 50-year-old male resident of Brampton was driving a 2006 Freightliner straight truck southbound on Victoria Avenue and, in an attempt to avoid colliding with the rear of a stopped motor vehicle at the intersection of 7th Avenue, the driver swerved into the northbound lane, colliding with a northbound 2012 Kenworth dump truck.
The dump truck was loaded with sand and hauling a large dump trailer, also loaded with sand. The dump truck was being driven by a 53-year-old St. Catharines male.
There were no other occupants in either of these vehicles and the damage to both was extensive.
The driver of the straight truck had to be extricated by firefighters and was transported to the Hamilton Health Sciences General Site by ambulance with life-threatening injuries where he remains at this time.
The driver of the dump truck suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Niagara Health System St.Catharines Site where he was treated and released.
The magnitude of the collision demolished both trucks causing a large diesel spill.
As the collision occurred on the bridge that crosses over 20 Mile Creek, it caused great concern to the environment. As a result Niagara Region, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Transportation, Niagara Conservation Authority as well as structural engineers responded quickly to contain and clean up the spill and address any structural concerns with regards to the bridge.
All agencies worked in cooperation with each other in a unified approach to effectively deal with this potential hazardous incident in a timely manner.
Victoria Avenue remains closed until further notice. in this area.
This collision remains under investigation.
