Voluntary Subscription“We did it!”
That was how Grimsby Pee Wee Kings manager Shawn Trevellick looked at things after the club finished off Nobleton Friday night to capture the Ontario Minor Hockey Association title.
In a hard fought playoff versus some of the best teams in Ontario, the Grimsby Kings capped their run with a 4-3 win in Game 3 to advance.
Coming back from a 3-1 deficit – including the successful defence of two penalty shots – the team showed tenacity and perseverance to bring home the Conn Smythe, said Trevellick.
In the six-point series, the Kings went undefeated with wins and ties against St. Thomas Stars (7-2), Burlington Eagles (7-1), and NobleKing Knights (6-0).
“Special thanks and congratulations to the kids, coaches, and parents. A big thank you to those parents and fans not directly part of the team but still came out to support us,” said Trevellick.
“It didn’t go unnoticed. Lastly, thank you to all of our sponsors. You are a very big part of this team and we thank you.”
After winning the NDHL Playdown tournament in early February, Grimsby went on to play St. Thomas.
Following the series win over the great St. Thomas team, they went on to face another excellent team in the Burlington Eagles.
Grimsby has faced both teams before, and this time came out on top as a result of great coaching and excellent team play.
With Nobleton, it was the first time Grimsby faced them.
Grimsby travelled to Nobleton for Game 1 on Friday, March 11 doubling the home team 2-1 on goals scored by Aidan Enns and Dylan Pergentile. Saturday March 12, the two teams meet again in Grimsby with the Kings again doubling their rival 4-2, with goals scored Luca McLaren, Spencer Pontes, Kade Marleau and Pergentile.
The Peewees will now be playing in the Ontario Hockey Federation championships April 8-10 in Mississauga. The four top teams from the four associations – OMHA, Alliance, greater Toronto, and Northern Ontario – will compete.
