Joanne Serkeyn, Ward 1, Lincoln 2022
Who is Joanne Serkeyn and why should we elect her as a Councillor in Ward 1?
I am an avid cyclist, and it is through cycling that I originally got to know our
Town, touring the beautiful countryside and the areas that make up Lincoln.
When the opportunity arose, I made the decision to make Beamsville my home.
We have an amazing community; many people are dedicated to improving Lincoln
for the future while preserving the things that make our community so great.
As a candidate, I offer to the community a lifetime of service, which includes
serving in the Naval Reserves for six years and 24 years as a police officer / first
responder. I have been a Rotarian for over ten years, and I have been an
advocate for 18 years on many causes, including school nutrition and other youth
programs aimed at those who are under privileged.
When it comes to Council and our elected politicians, I believe in transparency,
integrity, and commitment. I believe a Councillor should live in the area that they
represent, so when making decisions for the good of the Town, they see firsthand
the issues in their Ward. I also believe a Councillor must show up and participate
in debate, particularly around development.
After speaking to many people who live and work in Lincoln, there are three key
areas that must be addressed:
Transportation flow and truck safety – we hear a lot about this topic, but
very little concrete action has occurred to solve major problems
Smarter development – to be clear, I am not against development, but all
facets must be thought through – services, programs, roads, and other
infrastructure, all of which need better planning and solutions now. All
parties must be at the table to offer solutions to build the kind of Town we
all want to live in.
A safe and vibrant Community – Council members have a serious
responsibility to balance Lincoln as a place to grow and prosper, and for
Lincoln to be a place to belong
Everyone needs to feel safe in their homes and businesses, and to be safe
regardless the time of day. I am a strong believer in law and order, and I also
have a record of working with community partnerships to meet these
challenges and to find solutions.
I believe that to make change happen, you must be involved in your community.
Lincoln is headed for major growth in the very near future. For example, in
Beamsville we see more intense residential building along Ontario Street. Traffic
patterns and truck congestion have been identified as a problem for years, but
solutions have not been implemented in a timely fashion.
This must change. I will speak up and ensure we have smart comprehensive
development, with a focus on ensuring traffic flow and a truck bypass are true
priorities of Council.
